Public Art Idea: Community Engaged crosswalk mural @ Prairie & Pearl in Providence, RI

Hey Upper-South Providence!

I am honored to have been asked by The City of Providence office of Arts, Culture & Tourism to create a unique crosswalk mural on the intersection of Prairie Ave and Pearl Street. I want input from the neighborhood!

I’m calling this project: “CrossRoadsPVD”.

I am looking for local people (no artistic skill required) to share their own interpretations of what they envision this to look like and represent. I am also looking for painting volunteers to paint the mural with me once the design is complete. This will take place in late June- early July (weather permitting). Social Distancing will be a priority, so groups no larger than 8 will work on the mural at a time.

Please send me your suggestions, art, stories, poems, histories about your favorite little city. You can submit your ideas with any of your favorite social media platforms linked below. I look forward to seeing what we can create together!

Our past project, “Azulejos” 2015 Crosswalk mural in New Bedford, MA was inspired by the famous blue and white Portuguese tiles where combined with Guatemalan inspired designs to comment on the growth and change of the North End neighborhood. Essentially saying “All are welcome” to the grand entrance to Riverside Park’s recreational area. This crossing area is in a high-speed traffic zone. This mural was as proven to slow down traffic for pedestrians accessing Riverside Park.
